Synopsis
Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners who subsisted on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers 12 films he’s screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerously erotic Misericordia. I’ve never seen ‘Naked Lunch’ before
(2024). (1991), but I found myself thinking of it often at the ‘Queer’ screening at the 2024 London Film Festival: perhaps to be expected as William S Burroughs provided the source material for both films. Mexico, William Lee, an American writer… forty years old on the wrong side? Fifty?
But what does Eugene want?
He spends his days getting drunk, shooting and having casual sex with other men. One day, the muscular, smart young man Eugene walks into the bar and Lee is impressed. Plus there’s that telepathic drug that’s worth thinking about… I don’t know what director Luca Guadagnino wants to achieve stylistically with this film.
Lesley Manville is unrecognizable as the South American jungle doctor – so good for the makeup team!
The sets are almost exclusively decked out in block colors – muted reds and olive greens, for example – and have that vaguely unrealistic, clean Technicolor look that made me think the intention was to pay homage to the films of the film’s era. stock. But if that’s the case, why is Daniel Craig (is it my imagination or is he starting to look like Sid James?) stuck in the lead role, having to constantly deliver stupid lines in an accent that clearly isn’t his own? Drew Starkey is able to give a more subtle performance as the manipulative Eugene, and it certainly seems like a set-up.
It was good to watch once, but I won’t watch it again
